Dr. Emil Bej, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Friday, February 10, 2012, at the age of 86.

Emil was born on April 6, 1925 in Stryj, Ukraine.

He completed his high school education in Ukraine, his university degree in post-war Western Europe, and post graduate studies in the United States. Like many others, Emil and his family suffered greatly during the war years and immediately thereafter. He emigrated to Detroit, Michigan in 1949 with his family. While completing his post-graduate studies, Emil held a series of banking positions and taught economics at the high school level.

The Bej family settled in Shippensburg, Pa in 1969. At Shippensburg University, Emil was a professor of Economic Sutdies for nearly 30 years. He also held visiting professorships at the University of Manitoba, Wilson College, and Dickinson University.

Emil's family, economics and teaching were his passions. He contributed to this profession through numerous publications in American and foreign scholarly journals and other periodicals.

Cognizant of his roots, he also keenly followed and wrote about Ukrainian and Eastern European economic and political developements. As a teacher he was very dedicated to his students and committed to providing individual tutoring and guidance.

The Dr. Emil Bej Scholarship Fund has been established in his name at Shippensburg University to students majoring in Economics and/or Business Administration.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Vera, two sons, four grandchildren and other family members.
His son Dr. Mark Bej is a neurologist and lives with his wife Maria and children Christopher and Katya near Cleveland, Ohio. His son Andrew Bej is a corporate lawyer and lives with his wife Natalie and children Nina and Nicholas in West Chester, Pa.

A viewing will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012, at 6PM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home, 9529 Bustleton Ave, Phila., Pa 19115. Parastas Prayers will be sung at 7PM. His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at 11:30AM with Requiem Liturgy celebrated at 12 noon at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1013 Fox Chase Road, Jenkintown, Pa. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Elkins Park, Pa.
