From contributor Dennis Brandt #47232334:
In 1860, he was a farmer and carpenter living in Centre Township, Perry County, and stood 5' 9" tall with black hair and light brown eyes. That year he married Margaret Burd and fathered Catharine A. (b. @1863), Harriett (b. @1864), Sarah J. (b. 1866), and John C. (b. 1870).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service August 30 as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged by general order June 6, 1865, five days after the rest of the regiment, suggesting that he was too unwell to return home on June 1.

Inscription: age 34 yr. 6 mo. 23 days.
