Donald A. Bertling, 83, of 901 Maple St., Piqua, died at 11:05 pm Tuesday, September 4, 2007 in Upper Valley Medical Center. He was born June 18, 1924 in Piqua to the late George and Alice (Cron) Bertling. He married Mary Costello who preceded him in death in 1959. He then married Charlotte J. (Williams) Frigge who also preceded him in death November 29, 1990.

Survivors include a special friend, Mary Catherine Grimes; two sons, John (Ann) Frigge of Troy, Tom (Becky) Frigge of Hawaii; four daughters, Connie (Guy) Selsor of Columbus, Patty (Doug) Kiser of Youngstown, Lucy (Roger) Motten of Casper Wyoming, Betsy (Curt) South of Piqua, fifteen grandchildren, J.J. (Lisa) Frigge, Katie Frigge and her fiancÚ Doug Curnes, Sean Selsor, Cathy (Kevin) Foos, Doug Kiser, Donald Andrew Kiser, David (Trina) Kiser, Woody Motten, Matt Motten, Adrienne Tisher, Brendan Tisher, Corinne Tisher, Cassi South, Sue (Wayne) Pope, Tom (Nike) Cromes; seventeen great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; and a brother, Alan E. (Norma) Bertling of Dayton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Cromes, a granddaughter, Kathy Selsor, grandson, Tom Frigge, Jr., a brother, Dr. Marion Bertling, and two sisters, Mary Hughes, and Dorothea Bertling.

Mr. Bertling was a 1943 graduate of Piqua Central High School. His career began as the Manager of the Brad Theater of Bradford in the 1940's. He opened Bertling T.V. and Appliance store in 1949, then joined Jackson Instrument Co of Dayton as a Quality Control Manager and assisted in the development of color television testing equipment. Later he joined Christians T.V. and Appliances as the Service Manager. In 1964 he was hired by Valley Antenna Systems (Piqua CATV) as Chief Engineer and Program Director. He was a founding member of the Ohio Cable Television Association, a member of the National Cable Television Association, and a charter member of the Society of Cable Television Engineers having served on its Board of Directors. Central Cable purchased Valley Antenna Systems and appointed Don the Advertising Sales Manager. Later, Time-Warner purchased Central Cable Co., allowing Don to semi-retire staying with the company to handle the sales and programming for Channel 13 until his full retirement in 2006 that followed forty-two years in the cable television business.

Civically, he served as past president of the Piqua Area Jaycees and received their Outstanding Community Service Award in 1985. He was active with the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of its Tourist and Travel Committee, past president of Piqua Historical Museum, active member of the Piqua Kiwanis Club where he was distinguished as Kiwanian of the Year in 2002, an active member of Greene Street United Methodist Church where he served on most of its committees including the Bi-Centennial Committee, also serving as Chairman of the Trustees, and Staff-Parish Committee. He served as an advisor for the construction of the new Piqua High School, and for the TV-Electronics Departments of both the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School and Edison Community College. Don loved to play penny-ante poker and remained as the only living original member of the Monday Night Busy Boys Poker Club which began in 1942 when he was still in high school.

His funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 am Saturday, September 8, 2007 in Greene Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Lisa C. Ellison officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 pm Friday in the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home where a Kiwanis service will be conducted at 6:00 pm. Additionally the family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 am Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Greene St. United Methodist Church, 415 W.
