Mr. Stefka died Friday at St. Joseph Regional Care Center.
He was born August 2, 1930, the son of John E. Stefka, Sr. and Lydia Sefcik Stefka and was a graduate of Caldwell High School. He attended Texas A&M University and was married to Shirley Kiel on July 21, 1956. John lived in the New Tabor Community and operated a dairy farm with his father and brother Daniel. After his father's retirement, he and his brother operated the farm until 1981. Daniel and John continued to ranch together. When Daniel died, John ranched with his two sons until 2005. He was an active member of New Tabor Brethren Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He held the office of chairman and member of the Board of Elders of the church and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood, a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the church choir. He also helped organize the church cemetery and served as the president from 1971 until 2006 (35 years). John's devotion and service to the community extended to his serving as Chapter president of the Young Farmers; serving as president of the State Young Farmers, and receiving the State Outstanding Young Farmer award as well as the Hoblitzelle award for the advancement of rural life. John also served on the Caldwell School Board as well as the Board of Directors of Burleson-Lee County Soil Conservation District from October, 1955 until December, 2003. He served on the Burleson County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors from December, 2003 until October, 2004 for a total of 49 years with him serving as Chairman for most of that time. Family members said that John loved his family, his church, Aggie and Dallas Cowboy football, talking with people, ranching and going for a ride. John is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Shirley Stefka of New Tabor; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Scott Smith of Caldwell; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Stefka and Mark and Stacy Stefka, all of Caldwell; two grandsons, Tanner and Trent Stefka of Caldwell; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lillie Chafin of Caldwell and Betty and John Orsag of Friendswood; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
