Stephen Russell Mallory
Birth: 1812
Death: Nov. 9, 1873
Pensacola
Florida, USA

United States Senator, Civil War Confederate States Cabinet Official. Following volunteer service in the Seminole War (1835 - 1842), Mallory served as United States Senator from Florida from 1851 to 1861. At the beginning of the Civil War, he resigned his seat in the Senate to follow the Confederacy. In February, 1861 Confederate President Jefferson Davis appointed him Secretary of the Navy. At the time the Confederate Navy was all but nonexistent, but in time his navy accomplished numerous outstanding feats including the exploits of the CSS Alabama commanded by Raphael Semmes, the development of successful ironclad warships and the first submarine to sink an enemy ship, the CSS Hunley. In April 1865, he was captured in La Grange, Georgia, and held prisoner for almost a year. After his parole he returned to Pensacola and practiced law.
