Union Brevet Brigadier General in American Civil War. He was a manufacturer of hay pressers before the Civil War. In June of 1862, he joined the 37th Illinois Infantry as a Major and rose to the rank of Lieutentant Colonel by the middle of July. In October of 1863, he resigned to accept a promotion as a Colonel in the 22nd Regiment of the Corps De Afrique. As the white leader of one of the first Black units in the Civil War, he saw action in early 1864 during the seige of Port Hudson along the Mississippi River. The designation of the unit was changed to 92nd Regiment U. S. C. T. on April 4, 1864. As an officer of that unit, he saw action in the Red River Campaign from March to May of 1864 and participated in operations around Morganza in the Department of the Gulf. He was breveted a Brigadier General on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the war. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
