Judge Marcus Lee Sweat, Jr.

Judge Marcus Lee Sweat, Jr., 84, of Waycross died Friday night at Baptist Village Retirement Communities. He was born in Waycross to the late Marcus Lee Sweat and Charlye Bowles Sweat. Judge Sweat spent all of his life in Waycross except for time spent at Emory at Oxford College and the United States Army Air Corp.

Judge Sweat joined the United States Army Air Corp on December 5, 1942, serving during World War II until he was discharged on February 12, 1946. He worked 37 years for Sunnyland Foods out of Thomasville, Georgia. He then served Ware County as Probate Judge for 20 years before his retirement on December 31, 2004. He was awarded the Liberty Bell Award by the Waycross Bar Association in 2005.

Judge Sweat was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Within the church he served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Administrative Board, Board of Ushers for 50 years, and was past president of the John Wesley Sunday School Class. He led the singing for the John Wesley Class for many years while his wife accompanied him on the piano. He was also a member of the Travelers Protective Association and the Waycross Elks Lodge.

Judge Sweat is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryn Lucille Jones Sweat of Waycross, three daughters, Marcia Sweat Kilmark and her husband Wayne of Waycross, Kathy Sweat Dobson and her husband Charles of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Sandy Sweat Haut and her husband Joseph of Waycross, five grandchildren, Lauren Kilmark of Waycross, Whitney Kilmark Winge and her husband Michael of Waycross, Charles M. Dobson II, of Gangelet, Germany, Jody Haut Everson and her husband Zak of McKinney, Texas, Benjamin Joseph Haut of Athens, Georgia, a brother, Charles J. Sweat and his wife Cotton of Amelia Island, Florida, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 11 am, Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Sunday evening at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home. Members of the John Wesley Sunday School Class have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and should gather at the church by 10:30 am.
