Correct name: Bluford Lester (not Luster) Hollis. The widow's Civil War pension application at left shows his middle name as Lester in his wife's handwriting.

Bluford was born in Anderson County, Texas the year after Texas was admitted to the Union. His parents were Harvey Berry Hollis and Mary Ann "Polly" McCarty Hollis. They moved to what was to become Erath county in 1852. Erath County was not organized until 1856.

Bluford's whole life was spent in Texas as he grew up in the saddle watching over his father's cattle, and then his own. He had many exciting and thrilling experiences with the Indians. He served in the Civil War as a member of Captain Nicholas M. Gillentine's company of Texas cavalry, CSA. Captain Gillentine later became Bluford's father-in-law when he married Gillentine's daughter.

Bluford married Mary Etta Gillentine (1850-1936) on March 14, 1866, in Erath County, TX.
