| Birth: | Nov. 18, 1873 | | Death: | 1954 |  81 Year old Man Ends Life Monday—John Davis Hangs Self in Basement — An 81 year old retired Monroe Township farmer, John Gilmore Davis, ended his own life by hanging early last Monday morning in the basement of the home of a daughter, Mrs. Raleigh Kelly, of RD Sligo. Mr. Davis' suicide was attributed to ill health; a certificate of death by suicide was issued by Clarion County Coroner J. Ward Kier. The body was removed to the Guy Hawk Funeral Home at Sligo. Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm yesterday (Wednesday) at the home of a son, Dean Davis, RD Sligo; burial was in the Sligo Cemetery. Mr. Davis was a native of Monroe Township, having been born there on November 18, 1873, and had been a farmer until his retirement several years ago. In January of 1895 he was married to the former Myrtle Campbell, who preceded him in death. He is survived by five daughters and three sons; they are Mrs. Margaret Edelen, Clarion; Mrs. Clarence Stauffer, RD1, Clarion; Mrs. Lucille Hess, Clarion; Mrs. John Snyder, Kittanning; Mrs. Marie Kelly, RD Sligo; Ray C. Davis, Clarion; Richard Davis, RD Sligo; and Dean Davis, RD Sligo. Mr. Davis is also survived by a brother and a sister, S. J. Davis, Sligo and by a half-sister, Mrs. Laura Mapes, Clarion. Eighteen grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the Maccabees Lodge of New Bethlehem.
