He was born at Seaham Harbour, Northumberland, England, on March 23, 1892.

He graduated from Victoria University, Manchester, England in 1915. He began his ministry in Quincy, Illinois, going from there to Rutland, Vermont, and on to the First Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York. In 1927 he became minister of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, remaining there until 1955. He beacame a prominent Reformed theologian and one of New York's leading Protestant preachers, teachers and writers. He then was Professor of Christian Morals and Preacher at the University of Harvard. After that Buttrick taught at Garrett Seminary, Davidson College, Vanderbilt and the Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville. He had published many books. In a recent survey Dr. Buttrick was named the third most influential preacher in 20th century America, after Billy Graham and Martin Luther King, Jr.
