John Porter Cole
Little is know about John Porter Cole's early life. He was born in Huron County Ohio in 1832. His mother was named Ira Porter and of his father we only have a letter for a first name - A. John was a lifelong farmer and at some point he came to Angola in Steuben County to live.
In 1864, during the War of the Rebellion, he joined the 129th Indiana Volunteer Infantry as a private. Due to his service in the war he was twice wounded, once in the arm and once in the leg and becoming almost totally blind. The blindness was caused by exposure to excessive gun and canon fire.
John met Jane Sowle sometime in the 1870s when he was an employee of Jane's husband, Abel Sowle. Thirteen years after Abel's death John & Jane married in the Angola M.E. Church on the 18th of August 1895. Jane died three and a half years later and John went to Auburn, IN to live out the rest of his life with his step-daughter, Nellie (Sowle) Ramsey-Dycus. He is buried beside Jane Sowle-Cole in Circle Hill Cemetery, in Angola.
