Born in Belleville, New Jersey, he was an all around track and field athlete as a high jumper, javelin thrower, discus thrower and long jumper. As a member of the United States Track and Field team, he competed in the 1908 Summer Olympic Games London, England and finished 5th in two events. At the 1912 Summer Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden, He won the Gold Medal for the men's standing high jump and the Silver Medal for the men's standing long jump. In 1922 he was elected to the New Jersey State Assembly from Essex County and later became chairman of the Newark Athletic Track & Field Committee. He died at age 75 in Normandy Beach, New Jersey.
