William and second wife, Susan, were brutally murdered by his son Solomon
Autry. William, Susan and George( a son of Solomon) were all killed.
According to an artile in the Fort Smith paper, The Elevator,February 11,
1898 issue, Solomon and his family went to visit his parents. They got
involved in a religious arguement and Solomon became enraged. He killed
them with an iron bar and later burned them with coals from the fire.
Apparently, Solomon had became deranged four to five weeks earlier but the
family had been keeping it secret hoping he would recover. They had
planned to put him in an asylum. Solomon suffered severe burns on his
hands up to his wrist and on his body from the hips down. Solomon later
died February 11, 1898.
Served in the Confederate cause during the Civil War in Co. D 2nd Ark
Mounted Rifles, and he was in the battle of Pea Ridge.
