Major League Baseball Player, Manager. Over 20 seasons (1926 to 1945) he played as a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Senators, and the Boston Red Sox. He served as manager for the Washington Senators from 1933 to 1934, and the Red Sox from 1935 to 1947. Cronin was an All-Star seven times and in 1930 won the Most Valuable Player award from both the American League Writers and American League Sporting News. He finished his playing career with a .301 average, batting in 170 home runs and over 1400 RBI. In 1947 Cronin succeeded Eddie Collins as general manager of the Sox and held that position until 1959, when he was appointed president of the American League. During that time Pumpsie Green was hired to play infielder for the Sox, being the first African American to don a Red Sox uniform. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956 along with Hank Greenburg. His jersey number "4" was retired a few months before his death. (bio by: ditdit)
