He was a Delegate to the First and Second Provincial Congresses 1775 and 1776 from South Carolina. He was a member of the Continental Congress 1780 to 1782. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1776 to 1779 and again in 1782. He served as Speaker of the House from 1777 to 1779. He was a member of the Council of Safety in 1775 and 1776 during the American Revolution. He served as a law judge from 1776 to 1778. He also served as a member of the State Legislative Council from 1776 to 1778. He was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 1779 and 1780. He was appointed Judge of the United States Court for the District of South Carolina by President George Washington June 14, 1790. He was the grandfather of Confederate Generals Barnard E. Bee and Hamilton P. Bee.
