Robin was born Roberta Ann Shoudt, the daughter of Harry Kitchen Shoudt and Marie Reid Shoudt. She grew up in Milford, Hunterdon Co. She preferred to be called by her nickname, but some people shortened it to Rob.

She graduated from Delaware Valley Regional High School in Frenchtown, Hunterdon Co. She attended Seton Hall College in South Orange, Essex Co., New Jersey and then graduated from the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Forever afterwards she had a passion for Mexican history and culture.

Robin married Thomas George Kaplan on July 30, 1977 in Milford. She lived in Hunterdon Co. most of her life.

She was a Spanish teacher at North Hunterdon High School for many years, taking students abroad before it became fashionable to do so. The school gives out a Spanish excellence award every year in her honor. She also taught at Delaware Twp. Elementary School and Alexandria Twp. Middle School.

After leaving North Hunterdon, Robin enjoyed working as a Spanish and English tutor, an interpreter at the County Courthouse and a waitress at the Bagelsmith in Flemington.

She loved the arts. She played the guitar, was the lead singer in the rock band About Face and became an award-winning photographer.

She had two Irish setters and three cats.

Robin died of breast cancer after a brave 7-year struggle. She was a thoughtful, optimistic and interesting woman, and she was very proud of her nieces.

A friend of hers wrote to the local newspaper after her death: "Robin was a gifted individual who gave the world far more than she ever took from it." (Thank you, Sue.)

Robin was my godmother, my loving aunt, my mentor and my friend. Her death left a big hole in the family. She is very much missed.
