Continental Congressman. His family migrated to Carlisle at its founding in 1740, and Montgomery became a successful merchant and farmer. He was one of Cumberland County's first Justices of the Peace and became active in the militia. As a Captain in the Third Pennsylvania Battalion he served in the French and Indian War during the late 1750s. An advocate of independence from England, he became a member of Pennsylvania's Committee of Safety in 1775. In 1777 he was appointed Colonel and commander of the Cumberland County Regiment and took part in action in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Montgomery served in the Pennsylvania Assembly from 1781 to 1782. From 1782 to 1784 he was a member of the Continental Congress. He began service on the Carlisle Town Council in 1787, and in 1794 became Cumberland County Associate Judge. In 1783 Montgomery was a founder of Dickinson College and he served on the board of trustees until his death. Dickinson College named Montgomery Hall for him and awards an annual John Montgomery Scholarship in his memory. He was the father of John Montgomery (1764-1828) who served as Maryland Attorney General, Mayor of Baltimore, and US Congressman. (bio by: Bill McKern)
