Death: Nov. 30, 1883

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company I, 19th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during his regiment's repulse of elements of Pickett's Charge on the Third Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 3, 1863). His citation reads simply "Capture of flag of 57th Virginia Infantry (C.S.A.)". His Medal was issued on December 1, 1864. He was one of seven 19th Massachusetts Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor during the Civil War (the others being Major Edmund Rice, 2nd Lieutenant John G.B. Adams, Color Sergeant Benjamin F. Falls, Sergeant Benjamin H. Jellison, Sergeant Daniel J. Murphy and Corporal Joseph H. De Castro). (bio by: Russ Dodge)
