Birth: Jun. 22, 1917
Death: Jul. 24, 2007

George Wesley Reed, 90, passed away July 24, 2007, in the care of his family and loved ones. Born on June 22, 1917, to Edna Hays Reed and James Clyde Reed, he was raised in Wellsville, Ohio, home of the mighty Wellsville Tigers. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday, an astounding accomplishment, considering his long, embattled heart. But it was this same generous, kind, sweet heart that made him a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and neighbor, and gave all our gatherings a spark and spice like no other. Lieutenant G. W. Reed ("pappy" to his flight crew) served as the pilot of the famous B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" in the European campaign of World War II. He completed 30 missions with no fatalities, injuries or aborts, including two missions on D-Day. He remained in close contact with his crew throughout his life, attending many reunions of the 467th Bombadier Group. More importantly he passed on a sense of importance for understanding history, The Great War, and the honor of serving his country. He worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. for 26 years as a department and division manager in house-wares, shoes and draperies. He was intelligent and efficient, and demanded quality, courteous service for customers. In his retirement he enjoyed reading, traveling throughout the country, golf at the Meadowbrook golf club, endless puttering on yard and house projects, and watching his favorite game shows. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Banks Reed; daughter, Jodee (Paul Larsen); grand-daughter, Chloe; sisters Mary Jane (Frank Sutton), Jean (Jack MacLane); brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben and Sue Banks, Jeanne and Ron Masters, Joe and Afton Banks; scores of his beloved nieces and nephews, and their children; friends and neighbors of Peaks Circle. We will miss everything about him, like his hearty chuckle, his admonishments to return things, especially tools, to their rightful place, his love of a good time - camping but only with the luxuries of home, road trips to small towns with fascinating history, dancing at the Rainbow Rendezvous - his critique of restaurants and home cooking, the aroma of his smoldering stogie under the tree, his healthy skepticism of politicians, his warm welcomes, his tender good-byes, and the lasting strains of the Ohio State Buckeye Marching Band. A Viewing will take place at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street on Friday, July 27, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside service are Sat. at 10 a.m. at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
