Henry Ervin Purefoy Sr. was born on December 18, 1945 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was the fourth of eight children born to Lee and Estelle Carnegie Purefoy. At age 13 he was baptized at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He spent his childhood years in Chapel Hill until his early teens when he moved with his family to Newark, NJ, where he remained and lived all of his adult life.

Armed with charm and his outgoing personality, Henry met Iris Deloris Lewis in 1965. They married on April 8, 1967, and to this union two sons were born. He later attended the City of Newark Police Academy, but his true love for cars won out over law enforcement. Henry was a Master Mechanic and maintained a career as the Head Auto Mechanic for the City of Newark for 28 years. His passion for cars caused him to talk about working on cars even in his sleep. He would often acquire and rebuild old cars, and he also loved racing cars and going to the race track. He was known as "The Juice King" by friends for his special fuel formula that allowed him to win races.

Henry loved life, and he liked to keep busy. He loved people, and he loved to make them laugh. His passions also included a love for Bluegrass Country music and gospel; he also loved watching his westerns on TV. He didn't bite his tongue and he spoke his mind. But he also loved his friends and his family dearly.

He departed this life on August 16, 2007 at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Iris; two sons, Henry Ervin Jr. (GA) and Kelly (NJ); three daughters, Alonda, Rockea, and Latoya (all of NJ); a special grandson that he raised as his own, Michael Jae Purefoy (NJ); five sisters, Nancy Wells, Christine Purefoy, Mindel Knight, Jennifer Purefoy, and Helen Purefoy (all of NJ); one brother, Cecil Purefoy (VA); brothers-in-law, Artis Knight (NJ), Wayne Hargrave (NJ), and Fred Davis (VA); sisters-in-law, Darla Purefoy (VA), Evelyn Davis (VA), and Marjorie Hargrave (NJ); mother-in-law, Iris Hargrave (NJ); daughter-in-law, Kimberly Purefoy (GA); 3 aunts, Lillie Mae Hodges (MD), Jessie Purefoy (NC), Polly Ann Purefoy (NC); an uncle, Thomas Purefoy (NC); 15 grandchildren; 15 nieces; 11 nephews; 18 great-nieces; four great-nephews; special friends, Bobby and Jimmy Ward, Hank Glover, and Richard Barnes; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Estelle Purefoy; his oldest sister, Alice Shannon; and a niece, Gwendolyn Wimberly.
