Anna Mariah never liked her given names, so she always went by the name of Rita (pronounced Ride-ah).

She was the daughter of Jeremy Mathews Burroughs, a plumber, and Anna Rebecca Hampton Burroughs. Rita inherited the deep set 'Hampton eyes' from her mother. She grew up with relatives in Croton and Hopewell Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey.

Rita moved to Trenton, Mercer Co. as a young adult. Among her jobs were lacemaking in Yardley, Bucks Co.; farm service; and selling Larkin Soap products.

Rita married Frank Norman Shoudt on Dec. 14, 1910. It was a good marriage that lasted for 27 years.

She gave birth to eight children in quick succession: Charles in 1911, Kenneth in 1912, Harry in 1913, Grace in 1915, Lillian in 1917, Olive in 1919, Frank in 1920 and Wilson in 1922. There was also a ninth child who didn't survive long enough to be named.

The babies with Rita in the photo at right are Charles, Harry and Ken, respectively.

Rita had to work hard, but by all accounts her life was a happy one, helped no doubt by her keen sense of humor. She lived in Trenton and Upper Black Eddy throughout her adult years.

She was the grandmother of 23, great-grandmother of 51 and great-great grandmother of 48 as of late 2007.

Tragically Rita was struck by a car, and she died of internal injuries 13 days later. The hit-and-run driver was identified but never charged because he was related to a local law enforcement official.
