Bertha G. Marciniak, 88, of Apex, NC, formerly of New York Mills, passed away at The Oaks of Carolina, Raleigh, NC, on Tuesday, August 14, 2007, after several months of declining health. Bertha was born on November 28, 1918 in New York Mills, the daughter of the late Roman and Sophia (Gwiazda) Stanek. She attended New York Mills schools and her first job was in Mill Two. During World War II, she worked as a secretary in Rhodes Village Hospital. She married Ted S. Marciniak on January 3, 1945 at the Church of Transfiguration in New York City and together they raised five children. He died on August 8, 2001. Bertha spent several years as an employee of General Electric, however, most of her life was devoted to her home and family. In late 2004 she had a serious fall which left her unable to drive, so she moved to NC to live with her daughters where she truly enjoyed exploring new aspects of life. She was well-loved by her family and friends, and her lovely blue eyes and smile will never be forgotten. Bertha is survived by her children, son, Robert T. Marciniak and his wife, Kathy of Clifton Park, NY; daughter, Barbara Marciniak of Apex, NC, daughter, Karen Marciniak of Fuquay Varina, NC, daughter, Joan Horowitz and her husband, Franklin of Voorhees, NJ; and former son-in-law, Martin Carlson of Kinston, NC. She is also survived by her sister, Mildred Trojnar of New York Mills; and her brother, Frank Stanek and his wife, Martha of Plantation, FL; six grandchildren, Laurel Carlson, Zachary and Max Marciniak, and Jackson, Leo, and Clarke Horowitz. Also included are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ted Marciniak; son, Donald Marciniak; sister, Julia Stanek; and sister, Helen Kaczor. Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 284 Main Street, New York Mills and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus-Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church, New York Mills where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 4 until 7 p.m. Burial will take place in the Parish Cemetery in New Hartford. On Bertha's behalf, her family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the Village of New York Mills. She was born, raised, and lived in The Mills most of her life, and often said it was "the best village in the world." Memorial contributions in her name may be made to: Chatham Creek Retirement Home, 809 W. Chatham St., Cary, NC 27511.
