Edmund Plantagenet, the Earl of Rutland, was born to Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York and Cecily Neville. Slain at the battle of Wakefield December 30 1460 with his father and hastily buried at St John's Priory of Pontefract. His remains were exhumed in 1466 and interred in Fotheringhay.

Edmund was created 'Earl of Rutland' before 1454 by King Henry VI. Richard, Edmund's father had held the title of 'Lord Lieutenant of Ireland' had Edmund appointed as 'Lord Chancellor of Ireland'.

Edmund fought beside his father at the Battle of Wakefield during the 'Wars of the Roses'. Both he and his father we're beheaded, being displayed at the gates of York.

Edmund and his father were first buried here at St. John's Priory Pontefract, and then were later moved to their permanent burial location in Fotheringhay.
