Two years later he moved on to London, where he spent most of his adult life. He rose rapidly in the art world in London, being elected an Associate in the Royal Academy in 1770. Martin went back to Sweden for eight years in the 1780s to serve King Gustav III as "Royal Painter to the King of Sweden." He was once again in England between 1788 and 1797 but spent the last years of his life in Sweden, where, assisted by his younger brother, Johan Fredrik, he published engravings of his watercolors.
