Merrill Garner Phillips,74 Independence, died Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at the home. Mr. Phillips was born in Danville, Indiana, and had lived in Independence since 1950. He was an electrician with local union 124 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 31 years, retiring in 1982, and was active in the retiree's club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch. He was active in the Scouting movement for the past 40 years, including the position of Scoutmaster in both troops 278 and 216. He was a Sachem in Tribe of Mic-O-Say and received the Silver Beaver award in Scouting from the Heart of America Council in 1994. He was currently Coordinating Organizational Representative for Pack 216 and Troop 216 at the church. He was an Elder serving on hospital ministry and as maintenance director at the church. His survivors include his wife, Virginia L. Phillips of the home; three sons, Michael L. Phillips, Lee's Summit, Douglas C. Phillips, Lone Jack, and David S. Phillips, Independence; three sisters, Aileen Mills, Harlingen, Texas, and Norma Jean Mabbitt and Joyce Snowball, both of Brownsburg, Ind; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, with a Tribe of Mic-O-Say service at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Boy Scouts Troop 216 or the church building fund.
