| Birth: | Oct. 14, 1793 Kalmar Lan, Sweden | | Death: | Apr. 3, 1823 Stockholms Lan, Sweden | Poet, Playwright. Said to be gloomy and singularly unattractive, Stagnelius led a reclusive life, achieving true literary fame only after his death, when much of his poetry was found in his apartment in Stockholm. Like many of the nineteenth-century Romantic poets, Stagnelius was influenced by mysticism, gnosticism, and neoplatonism. Though little is known about his personal life, it is thought that opium and alcohol, used to alleviate both physical pain and loneliness, contributed to his early death. Considered by many people to be second only to Esaias Tegnér among Sweden's greatest poets, Stagnelius produced during his short career an epic, three plays, and numerous short lyrics, including sonnets.
