Beatrice Spence was the daughter of William D. "Willie" Spence and his wife, Emma G. Dillion. She married James Herbert Vaughan in about 1926.

Beatrice Spence Vaughan, 96, died Jan. 27, 2004. She was born Feb. 22, 1907 in Tyrrell County, N.C. She was the surviving child of the nine children of Willie D. and Emma Dillon Spence.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Ann R. Vaughan of Bloomington, Ind.; her granddaughter, Susan G. Vaughan of New York City; grandson and wife, F. Richard and Cynthia Murdock Vaughan of Bloomington; great-granddaughter and her partner, Melissa Overton and Matthew Waters; and her great-great-grandson, Eden Vaughan Waters. In addition, she leaves very many nieces and nephews and a dedicated and loving caregiver, Patricia Webb.
When she was 12, her father bought a farm in Virginia and the family moved to Princess Anne County, where she resided until 1926. In that year she married J. Herbert Vaughan, her high school sweetheart, who had taken a job with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad in Norfolk. In 1953 they moved to Nashville, Tenn. when he took a job with the Tennessee Central RR. After the death of her husband, she moved to Bloomington, Ind. in 1986 to live near her son. For the next dozen years, she lived independently and actively, enjoying the many facets of Bloomingtons senior community.
During World War II she took her first employment and was able to combine her considerable skills in sewing with a talent for sales by working for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. and in Nashville, she worked for several retail stores. She was retired from Singer.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Nashville, Tenn.
A memorial service and burial will take place at her family's church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. Arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3201 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37215 or to The Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters, 601 Childrens Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507. "
