After graduating from Baton Rouge High School in 1953, John Dolan Bookman went to the University of Miami as a running back-defensive back. He led the nation in interceptions in 1956. He was taken in the eighth round of the NFL draft by the New York Giants in 1957 and played in eleven games as a defensive back and kick returner in his rookie year. He was an All-Pro defensive back in 1960 with the Dallas Texans, now the Kansas City Chiefs, of the American Football League. In 1961, he played with the New York Titans, which later became the New York Jets. In his three-year pro career, he had thirteen interceptions in a total of thirty-three games. He scored one touchdown. After his playing career ended, he was a high school football coach until his death. (bio by: Mel Bashore)
