OSTERMAN RITES AT ARLINGTON

Funeral services were held at Arlington Saturday (July 28, 1942) for Louis H. Osterman, 75, who died Wednesday at Bristol, Colorado. Osterman had made his home in Bristol for the past nine years.

His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Osterman, were among the earliest pioneers of the Arlington community, coming before the town was founded and when Omaha was only a dugout trading post. He had farmed in the Arlington vicinity before moving to Bristol.

Four sisters and one brother survive: Mrs. B. F. Borlen of Olney, Illinois; Mrs. Lizzie Hansen of Plainview; Frank Osterman of Clarks; Mrs. Matilda Gannon of Pullman, Washington; and Mrs. A. D. Elmer of Manila, Philippine Islands

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. H. VanValkenburgh, who chose as his theme “The Pioneer”. Mrs. Blanche Woods Keller, accompanied by Mrs. Alice Newcom, sang “There’ll Be No Night There” and “Saved by Grace”. Pallbearers were Harry Osterman, Will Osterman, Bern Decker, Ed Luebker, Ed Giesselman and Hubert Hansen. Interment was made in the Hartung cemetery.

The spelling of the last name could be Ostermann. Obituary and research kindly done by FindaGrave volunteer Christine Solomon; Note: On March 1, 1867 Nebraska was admitted to the Union as the 37th state. Before then it was known as Nebraska Territory. The Village of Arlington, Nebraska, originally known as Bell Creek, was platted in 1869. Louis Osterman was 75 in 1942, so was most likely born in 1867. The first permanent settlement in Washington County was in 1854. In that same year, the county was organized as one of the eight original counties proclaimed by acting Governor Thomas B. Cuming; it was reorganized in 1855.
