Johanna Nisel came over from Germany with her husband, August Flemming prior to August of 1854. Her husband, August and 2 of her children (Thedora and Rosa) died on the journey.

were staying in Indianola. On August 18, 1854, Johanna Nisel married Valentin "Johann Valtin" "Valentine" Hoch in Indianola, Calhoun Co, TX.

Valentin had 4 children from a previous marriage

1. Friedrike Hoch-born September 16, 1832, baptized September 16
2. August Friedrich Simon Hoch-born November 4, 1834, baptized November 16
3. Marie Magdalene Hoch-born March 3, 1838, baptized March 11
4. Amgethy Hoch-born August 28, 1840, baptized September 6

There are four children know to have been born to Valentin and Johanna, three girls and one boy:
1. Matilda (Hoch) Riebe, 2/1857;
2.Emma Augusta (Hoch) Allen, 6/1859;
3.Theodore William Hoch, 3/1863;
4.Molly Elizabeth (Hoch) Clark, 6/1865.
