Ross V. Renwick Jr., 63, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007, in Grand Blanc, Mich., after a short, intense battle with Merkel cell cancer. Cremation has taken place and in August, there will be a memorial service in Petoskey, Mich.

Varn was born July 27, 1943, in Saginaw, Mich. In 1946, his family moved to Walloon Lake where he had the best of all possible childhoods — swimming and playing on boats in the summer and skiing in the winter. Life was good! He worked several summers in his father's grocery store at Walloon Lake and started his future career in the radio business as a part-time DJ at WMBN in Petoskey. In 1961, Varn graduated from Petoskey High School, and in 1967, he graduated from Michigan State University (and remained an avid fan the rest of his life.) For several years after graduation, Varn worked in radio and TV stations in Alma, Bay City, Port Huron and Flint. He then spent some years working in management and sales.

From the time he was a teenager, Varn loved driving and eventually decided to make a career of it, driving tour buses all over the U.S. and in some parts of Canada. With his friendly, outgoing personality, Varn was very popular with his passengers and tour guides. Still wanting to drive big vehicles, he went to work for NTB in 2001 where he drove semis in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana, until he was diagnosed with cancer in November 2006. Work was very important to Varn. He liked to work; he liked to work at different jobs; and above all, he always gave his very best to every job he had.

His family, though, was more important to him, beginning with his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married in 1976. They enjoyed traveling (she would go on the bus with him occasionally) and being on various boats they owned over the years.

Varn's interest in boats began on Walloon Lake and continued throughout his life. He was looking forward to spending time on their newest boat this summer.

Varn is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children: Terri and Gary Lensenmayer of Virginia; Lee Anne and Greg Allison of Pennsylvania; Daryl and Sara Ertel of Michigan; David Ertel of Michigan; Julie and Richard Bailey of Michigan, Dan Ertel of Michigan; his sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and David James of Michigan; and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Ross and Lucile Renwick.

Memorials may be made to: Merkel Cell Cancer Research Center, UM Comprehensive Cancer Center, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, c6-303, Ann Arbor, Mich. 48109-0944.
