| Birth: | Jun. 12, 1823 | | Death: | Nov. 26, 1877 |  Methodist Bishop and Author. His first book, Marvin's Lectures, grew from weekly lectures against Catholicism that were first published in the St. Louis Repubican. Because of his Southern sympathies, he served as chaplain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he was elected bishop of the TransMississipi Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, until he was appointed bishop in the Pacific area. He made a world tour of missions and wrote The East by Way of the West. Marvin College in Waxahachie, Texas is named for him. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
