John Wiley Kerby, the son of Alford and Catherine Kerby, was born 19 December 1855 in Coryell Co. Texas. Mary E. Couch was born 31 July 1860. They were married 9 August 1876 in Coryell Co., Texas.

They lived in Coryell Co., for many years, where he owned and operated a cotton gin on the Cowhouse Creek west of Purmela at Cravely Crossing. John was the proud owner of three grey Steel Dust mares named Bell, Lucy and Daisey. They were said to have been the first of their kind in the area.

They were good friends of the Bramletts, Browns and Jones families in and around Purmela. They were members of the Baptist Church at Cravely Crossing that was later moved to Purnela.

After living in Coryell Co., the family moved to Mills Co., Texas. Here John built and owned a cotton gin at Caradan, Texas.

John died 16 Feb. 1936. Mary lived until 8 Jan. 1949. They are buried at Caradan Cemetery in Caradan, Texas.

Bob Kerby provided much of the information and memories. He is the son of John and Mary and lived in Mills Co.
