Charles Henry "Chinski" Root
Birth: Mar. 17, 1899
Middletown
Butler County
Ohio, USA
Death: Nov. 5, 1970
Hollister
San Benito County
California, USA

Charlie Root was a top flight pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. He was a durable winner for 16 seasons, winning at least 10 games in ten different seasons, with a top mark of 26-15 in 1927. In 1969 he was named the all-time Cubs righthander. His main claim to fame is as the pitcher who gave up Babe Ruth's "called shot" when the "Bambino" homered off him in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series. The hard-nosed, tobacco-squirting Root claimed that he'd have decked Ruth with a fastball had he really called his shot. Cubs catcher Gabby Hartnett agreed with Root's version of the incident, saying in an interview after Root died in 1970 that " Chinski would have thrown one down Ruth's Goddamn throat if he had tried to call his shot". Others including the Yanks Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez and Ben Chapman swore that it really happened. Either way, the incident has become frozen in time as one of the most famous in baseball history. Cremated at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, Salinas, CA. (bio by: Frank Russo)
