Mary D. Smiley, 87 of Camarillo passed away at her residence on Thursday, June 2, 2005, after a lengthy illness. She had been a resident of Ventura County for 53 years, coming from the Los Angeles area, Mary was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Lincoln, Ill., to Andrew and Mary Dovin. Mary was a registered nurse, having worked at St. Vincent and The Good Samaritan hospitals in Los Angeles. After she obtained her nursing degree, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. She was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Church, and Bentura County Assistance League. Mary enjoyed gardening, and loved animals. The family dog, Slammer, was her constant companion.

Mary will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Phil Gumbert of Camarillo; stepdaughter and husband, Sue and Richard Hamilton of San Marino, Calif.; stepson Kenneth E. Smiley Jr. of Palos Verdes, and stepson and wife Dr. Douglas F. and Nancy Smiley of Pasadena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Kenneth E. Smiley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Mary's memory, to a favorite charity. Private services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 2052 Howard, Road, Camarillo.
