U.S. Army officer. Eldest son of celebrated American statesman William H. Seward and his wife, the former Frances A. Miller, Augustus Henry Seward graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and spent much of his life in the West, serving as an officer in the paymaster corps. On April 14, 1865, during the attempted assassination of his father by John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirator Lewis Powell, Augustus was among the members of the Seward family and household who were injured. He died 11 years later, three weeks before his 50th birthday. Predeceased by his parents and sisters Cornelia and Fanny, also buried here, his survivors included his brothers Frederic W. and William H. Seward. Augustus Street in Auburn, NY, one of four streets forming a block honoring the Seward family, was named in his honor.
