William Mercer resided in Columbus County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting at Camp Whiting, near Wilmington, at age 37, January 31, 1863, for the war. Died in hospital at Charleston, South Carolina, March 8, 1863. Cause of death not reported. He was a member of Company G, 51st North Carolina Troops.
