On December 4, 1895 John married Emma Estelle McCroan in the Jewel Community, Eastland County, Texas. They had four children: Euna Estelle, Clyde William, Lylia Ozella and a baby daughter born July 28, 1901 who lived only a few hours. The baby was buried at Jewel Cemetery.

Between 1901 and 1902 the family moved into Oklahoma. In 1903 Emma died of typhoid fever. John brought his three small children back to Texas. Emma's parents (Augustus Owen McCroan and Mary Lewis Hardeman) raised Ozella and John's parents (Jasper Gibbs Pulley and Nancy Jane Weatherman) raised Euna and Clyde.

John married Kate Bonnell Westerman, widow of William Clifford Westerman, on August 14, 1914 in Eastland County, Texas. They had two children: Lowell Wesley and Sylvia Yvonne.

John bought a half interest in a ranch near Alpine, TX and moved his family there. He suffered a heart attack and died. The family returned to the Jewel Community, Eastland County, Texas.
