A son of Samuel and Cora (Carter) Bickers, he married Linnea Erickson at Attica, Indiana on October 28, 1939. They had one son, James Bickers, Portage, Indiana. The family home was at 210 W. Beardsley, Champaign, Illinois. He retired as a lieutenent from the Champaign Polce Department in 1954. He was well known throughout the area as the "gospel singing policeman". He worked extensively with youth groups and was a deacon and choir director of the First Southern Baptist Church. For many years after his retirement from the police department, he served as city assessor, and the 1957 City Directory lists him as the Deputy County Assessor. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.

Further information provided by a relative is as follows. His first wife's name was Minnine G. Schaeffer and that he had an adopted son, Billy Joe Bickers.
