John Henry Greening, Sr. was born in Ohio in 1916 to Lora Gale Benedum and Charles Arden Greening, Sr. He grew up near Barberton, Ohio and moved to Portsmouth, VA in the early 1950's. In high school his ambition was to be an actor, but he never pursued that. He was married to Hazel Heffelfinger Greening and had two children - Nancy and John Henry Greening, Jr. To date he has 5 grandchildren: Catherine, Christine, Caroline, Laura and Elizabeth; 9 great-grandchildren: Karen, Jane, Jennifer, Eric, Connor, Brian, Amanda, and Jonathan; and five great-great grandchildren: Madison, Sabrina, Gage, Chasen, and Samantha.
John enjoyed music and playing his organ. He liked to bird-watch also. He delighted in his grandchildren which brought him much happiness in the last years of his life. He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge also.
John passed away in 1971 at the age of 55 from colon and intestinal cancer. He has been known to visit his family on several occasions since his death, most notably having been seen at the wedding of this third grandchild, Laura.
We, his family, miss him every day.
