CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — A 13-year-old girl stepped into the path of a tanker truck and was killed while crossing the street Friday.
Ivy Davis of Crawfordsville was pronounced dead at a hospital about 12:30 p.m., authorities said.
"We believe she just misjudged, thinking the semi had passed and walked out," said Crawfordsville Police Chief Kurt Knecht.
Davis and another girl were trying to cross Whitlock Avenue about noon when she stepped off the curb into the path of the oncoming truck, police said.
Melissa Thornburg, of Crawfordsville, said she was driving behind the semi when she saw the accident and stopped to help.
"I grabbed the other little girl and held onto her. She was hugging me like she knew me and I was doing the same thing because it was traumatic," Thornburg said. "People were just running everywhere."
The truck driver, Gary D. Geise, 43, of Arlington, submitted to a blood test but Knecht said police did not believe he was at fault.
Davis was a student at Tuttle Middle School in Crawfordsville.
"She always did what she was supposed to do," said Kim Nixon, principal at Hoover Elementary School. "She was one of those kids you enjoyed being around."
