He enlisted 5 October 1864 as a Private in C Company of the 47th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. He participated in the Battle of Cedar Creek in the vicinity of Shenandoah County, Virginia.
During his service he was stationed near Winchester VA, Charlestown WV, Washington D.C., Savannah GA, and Charleston SC. He served one year, being discharged 5 October 1865.
He returned home and to farming. He married Saloma Beaver in 1869 and they had three children. They moved to Anthony Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania where they continued to farm.
He began to suffer from chronic diarrhea and was admitted to White Hall, a military hospital in Montour County. He was declared an invalid 25 October 1890 and began receiving his military pension as a Civil War veteran.
He died at home in Anthony Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania on 18 July 1896. His Civil War pension card shows that his widow began receiving his pension as of that date.
