| Birth: | May 30, 1812 | | Death: | Sep. 20, 1900 |  Civil War Union Major General, US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar & shortly thereafter served in the Black Hawk War. He served 3 terms in the state legislature & 6 terms in Congress, resigning to accept a commission as Brigadier General of Volunteers from President Lincoln. He was promoted to Major General in 1862 & participated in the battles of Belmont, Fort Dolenson, Shiloh & Vicksburg. Here he was relieved of his command by General Grant, but was later restored to his command by Lincoln & served in the campaign of Louisiana & Texas. He presided over the Democratic National Convention of 1876 & was elected Circuit Judge in 1870.
