Lucille (Schmidt) Hirning, 89, passed away from this life unexpectedly at her home in Hague, ND on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Lucille was born November 25, 1929, at her parent’s home to Jacob and Amelia (Schoeck) Schmidt, one of 12 children. She grew up on the Schmidt farm 10 miles NE of Herreid, SD, and attended rural school, followed with attendance at Herreid High School.

Lucille married Ervin A. Hirning of Zeeland, ND on January 20, 1947, in Herreid, SD. Together they had 3 children – Bondell, Sherlock, and Scott. Ervin passed away in 2000. They spent most of their early lives farming on the Hirning family farm 6 miles south of Hague.

Lucille was a hard working farm wife and loving mother from 1947-1966. In the fall of 1966, she began managing the Herreid Bowling Alley Café until 1977, during the years Ervin taught school in Herreid. In 1977 Lucille and Ervin moved back to Hague where Lucille managed the Hague Café from 1979-1986. From 1986-2014 Lucille was employed at the Strasburg Care Center as a CNA until she retired from her labors at the age of 85.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, her parents, Jacob and Amelia, brothers: Arthur, Jake, and Alvin; sisters: Hilda Davis, Edna Langeliers, Alma Ryckman, and Annetta Fetterley, son-in-law, Clayton Stam and grandchild, Sherlock Hirning, Jr.

Lucille is survived by her 3 children: Bondell Stam of Fargo, ND, Sherlock (Marie) Hirning of Rapid City, SD, Scott (Kim) Hirning of Lincoln, ND; grandchildren: Shawn (Sharon) Stam of Fargo, Shaundra Stam of Fargo, Carrie Hanson of Rapid City, Seth Hirning of Tioga, ND, Erin Hirning of Rapid City, and daughter-in-law, Kate Hirning of Mt. Vernon, WA, and Keelan Smith and Aiyanna Hirning of Lincoln; great-grandchildren: Erica (David) Johnston of Grand Forks, ND, Cheyenne Stam of Grand Forks, Piper Stam Patterson of Fargo, Alexander and Haley Hirning of Mt. Vernon, Sage Hanson of Rapid City; sisters: Norma Zalewski of Selah, WA, Alice Spadie of Las Vegas, NV, Phyllis Fjeldheim of Pollock, SD; brother, Arlow Schmidt of Herreid, SD, and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the US.

Lucille was a devout wife, loving mother, dedicated employee with an unrelenting work ethic and exemplary citizen. She enjoyed interacting and building relationships with her customers and patients. She made many friendships that continued throughout her retirement. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her children and their families, her sister, Phyllis and niece, Pam, and her treasured card playing and bingo friends. It would be remiss not to mention that she enjoyed doing her house cleaning, ironing, and decorating her house with knick-knacks, and being the "Candy Grandma". She was a caregiver at heart and always willing to offer her services to anyone in need. Lucille was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. Lucille was a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid.
