John McDouall Stuart
Birth: Sep. 7, 1815
Death: Jun. 5, 1866

Explorer. Born in Dysart, Fifeshire, Scotland, he was one of the most important people associated with South Australian exploration. He attended the Scottish Naval and Military Academy, graduated as a civil engineer and arrived in South Australia as a surveyor in January 1839. During the 1850s, he began several expeditions surveying, prospecting and exploring the country's many potentials. Stuart's greatest achievement was being the first man to cross the continent south-north and back in 1861 and 1862. By 1864, due to the severe hardships of his expeditions and in poor health he returned to Scotland. He later moved to London where he died on June 5, 1866. The transcontinental Australian Highway, Stuart Terrace, Stuarts Well, Stuart Town, Stuart Park, Stuart Caravan Park and Central Mount Stuart are all named in his honor. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
