| Birth: | Jun. 27, 1913 | | Death: | Sep. 12, 1993 | Billiards Player. 15-time world champion of pocket billiards from 1941-1957. He is considered by most to be one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Between the years of 1941 and 1956, he won the United States states pool championship eighteen times. He pioneered and regularly employed numerous trickshots, set innumerable records, and helped to popularize the game of billiards as a national recreation activity. He won the world title 15 times between the years 1940-1957. He once ran 526 balls in a row in an exhibition of straight pool, a record that may never be beaten. He never missed; he quit after making the 526th ball. He was the technical consultant for the movie "The Hustler" starring Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman, in which had a cameo role as a "stakes holder." Though a stroke sidelined him in 1957, he soon returned to tournament play and continued to serve as a consultant to the Brunswick Corp. He was inducted into the Billiard Congress Hall of Fame in 1968. (bio by: trumpetrex)
