Leroy Flamond of Strathmore, beloved husband of Vi Flamond, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on June 5, 2007 at the age of 70 years. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn, his son Fraser of Strathmore; daughter Sandi of Victoria, B.C.; three brothers, Tom of Strathmore, A. Dallas of Abbotsford, B.C., and Darlson of Nfld.; Aunt Bebe LaVallee of St. Ambroise, Man.; brother-in-law Vern (Doreen) Sipos of Calgary; nieces, nephews, cousins and a wide circle of friends.
Leroy was born in Winnipeg, moved to Edmonton in his preteens, eventually moving to Calgary where he met and married his wife of forty-five years. It was in Edmonton that Leroy took up boxing, which led to a sixty-five-fight professional career as one of Canada's premier middleweights. Leroy fought out of Portland, Oregon, Reno, Nevada and Canada. The City of Edmonton recognized Leroy's distinguished boxing career by naming him to their honour roll.
Leroy worked for seventeen years as an Inspector for the City of Calgary Roads Department. In 1974 Leroy and his family moved to Strathmore where he ran a successful motel business. Always the entrepreneur, Leroy dabbled in promoting long after he hung up his gloves as well as many other business ventures in Strathmore. His friends will remember him best for his wit, his love of wheeling and dealing and searching out new dining establishments. He was an active member of the Métis Nation of Alberta.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at Lord of All Lutheran Church, Strathmore.
