Cook, second Congressman from Illinois and the man for whom Cook County was named, in 1855, he was elected Mayor of Springfield and the following year Sheriff of Sangamon County. After the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 he raised a company of troops and was commissioned Colonel of the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
