Samuel Thurman Cooley moved to the state of New York with his parents (Noah Cooley and Jane Sutherland) when about 6 years of age. Came to Detroit in 1830 and settled at Pontiac, Oakland Co., Mich. Removed to Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., Mich. in 1835, where he resided until July 14, 1890, when he resided with his son William until his death which occurred Jan. 4, 1892. He was married in 1830 to Miss Electa Woodruff of the state of New York, who died Apr. 5th, 1843 at Pittsford, Mich. He was again united in marriage with Mrs. Lydia Carter in 1844, who died at Pittsford, Mich., Nov. 19th, 1887.

Three sons and one daughter survive him by his first marriage, dying in infancy; Byron Cooley born Jan. 28th, 1834, Woodruff Cooley born 1836, died in infancy; Rebecca O. Cooley born March 30, 1839; William Cooley born April 10, 1841 and James W. Cooley.

He leaves no children by his second marriage. He was a consistent Christian and a member of the M. E. Church his whole life.
