Son of Oliver Wheeler of Acton, Massachusetts, and Hepzibah Munroe Wheeler of Billerica, Massachusetts. Married Hannah Ashby of Salem, Massachusetts, 27 May 1802 in Hillsborough. Resided subsequently in Salem, in Farmington, Ontario County, New York, and in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York.

Oliver and Hannah's eldest child, Harriet Page Wheeler Decker Young, became the first white woman (or more precisely, the senior member of the first group of three) in the Great Basin, accompanying Brigham Young in 1847. Son Charles Oliver died as an infant, in 1805. Sons Benjamin Franklin and Henry Hammond became grocers in the area of Akron, Ohio. Daughter Clarissa Caroline married Caleb Sawyer and pioneered in Livingston County, Michigan. Oliver's 1854 will mentions no children.
